THURSDAY, DECEMBER 31, 2020 - My entire adult life I have been waiting for permission to sit around and do nothing …. and here we are!

- Happy New Year everyone – with hope.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 3rd, 2021 - Join us for morning worship at 10.00 – Rev. Katherine McCloskey leading.

MISSION CAPSULE: We end the past year in gratitude to God for the moments and the milestones in which we experienced God’s presence. We begin the new year in prayer for a more just and loving world where we depend on the abundance of God’s grace, the generosity of God’s mercy and the unwavering promise of God’s compassion.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 6th, 2021 - Beaches Prayer Group will gather at 9:30.

Heaven is around and within me, I sense it, as the blind sense shape with their fingers, let me pause and sense the eternity in me.

Over the past year, most of my “moments of grace” have been interactions with other people, I look forward to more of them.

And now this … Children were asked questions about the old and new testaments. The following statements about the Bible were written by said children. They have not been retouched or corrected. Incorrect spelling has been left in.

2. Adam and eve were created from an apple tree. Noah’s wife was Joan of ark. Noah built and ark and the animals came on in pears.

3. Lots wife was a pillar of salt during the day, but a ball of fire during the night.

4. Samson slayed the philistines with the axe of the apostles.

5. Moses led the jews to the red sea where they made unleavened bread, which is bread without any ingredients.

6. The egyptians were all drowned in the dessert. Afterwards, Moses went up to mount cyanide to get the ten commandments.

7. The first commandment was when Eve told Adam to eat the apple.

8. Moses died before he ever reached canada then Joshua led the Hebrews in the battle of geritol.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 20th, 2020 - Join us for morning worship at 10.00 – Fourth Sunday of Advent – Rev. Katherine McCloskey leading.

MISSION CAPSULE: Being forced to flee from ones home and ending up in a foreign land is terrifying. There are often language, social and cultural barriers in the new place that make settling very difficult. Rani Ibraham, the leader of the Newcomer Mission at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Peterborough sees it as his calling from God to make this transition easier for those in his community. He does this through social programming, accompaniment services and prayer gatherings. With support from Presbyterians Sharing … this mission has helped hundreds of people experience the love of God and provided people with a sense of belonging in Canada.

NOTE: Tara Kannangara (singer, trumpeter with Julian’s group) is making a film to go along with the music from her most recent set of songs and has an “indiegogo” campaign underway to raise funds for the completion of the project. She’s received funding through government grants for the music side, but now that they are ready to film they’re hoping to pull some funding in from friends, family and the wider community. The link below brings you to the indiegogo page where you can find out more about it, (there’s a four minute video that explains everything) and if you feel moved, make a contribution. Every little bit helps, but no pressure of course. Tara and Britany (her co-director and filmmaker) are super brilliant and I know that this work will be moving and heartfelt and important. So just trying to spread the word where I can! Julian Anderson Bowes

AND STUFF:

I think we can all agree that in 2015 not one single person got the answer correct to “where do you see yourself five years from now”

If 2020 was math word-problem: If you’re going down a river at 2MPH and your canoe loses a wheel, how much pancake mix would you need to reshingle your roof?

I don’t think the therapist is supposed to say “wow” that many times in your first session, but here we are!

If you can’t think of a word say “I forgot the English word for it” That way people will think you are bilingual instead of an idiot.

I’m at a place in my life this year, where errands are starting to count as going out.

I am at that age where my mind still thinks I am 29, my humour suggests I am 12 while my body mostly keeps asking if I am sure I am not dead yet.

I don’t always go the extra mile, but when I do it’s because I missed the exit.

We all get heavier as we get older, because there’s a lot more information in our heads.!!!

I’m getting tired of being part of a major historical event.

How many of us have looked around our family reunion and thought “well aren’t we just two clowns short of a circus?”

Have a good week - Merry Christmas MB

During his recovery, Halidu enrolled in a PWS&D supported program that equips people with disabilities with skills to obtain a livelihood. During workshops, he learned vocational skills that included weaving, tailoring and dressmaking. Today, Halidu is using what he learned during his recovery to lead a healthy, productive life and run a successful business. STUFF:

It’s weird being the same age as old people.

Having plans sounds like a good idea until you have to put on clothes and leave the house.

Me: (sobbing my heart out, eyes were swollen, nose red) … I can’t see you anymore. I am not going to let you hurt me like this again!
Trainer: It was a sit up. You did one sit up!!

The devil whispered to me – “I am coming for you” I whispered back – “bring pizza”….

When I was a kid, I wanted to be older. This is not what I expected…..

Chocolate is God’s way of telling us that he likes us a little bit chubby ….

It’s probably my age that tricks people into thinking I’m an adult …….

Counselor: Your wife says you never buy her flowers. Is that true?
Him: To be honest, I never knew she sold flowers.

My wife asked me to take her to one of those restaurants where they make the food right in front of you. So I took her to Subway and that’s how the fight started …

During the middle ages they celebrated the end of the plague with wine and orgies. Does anyone know if there is anything planned when this one ends??

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 6th, 2020 - Second Sunday in Advent – join us for morning worship at 10:00 Rev. Katherine McCloskey leading. Our student, Cole Kim will be preaching.

MISSION CAPSULE: In Malawi, 20 year old Layton had been engaging in unsafe sexual behaviours. Several of Layton’s friends attended PWS&D’s supported youth clubs where they would get together and discuss how to achieve a world without AIDS. His friends warned him about the consequences of his actions and shared information they learned at the youth club. Layton never thought to attend these meetings until one day when his friends persuaded him to get an HIV test. Anxious about the results – which eventually came back negative – Layton knew he needed to change his life. Deciding to join the youth club himself, he reflected, “I think my friends from youth club saved my life. I joined them so that we can save many from such behaviours.”

NOTE: Our new tenants for the church basement are making great progress in preparing to move in during the month of December. There are still one or two things that we at Beaches need to do to clear out some of the space. In the old kitchen, in the basement, there is some old furniture in it. (two bookcases, a rocking chair, a desk are the main items.) They were donated many years ago as potential furniture for our refugee family, but are not in great shape and surplus to requirements. I would like to carry them out to the street and leave them there for scavengers to pick up, but need help. Each item feels like it would take just a couple of people to lift. On the current schedule it would be good to have these items moved out by the end of next week. If anyone thinks that they can assist with this, please contact me with your availability over next week. brettcrisp@rogers.com. If we had four people I think it could all be done in under an hour. Thanks.
Michael Brett

MONDAY, DECEMBER 7th, 2020 - Theology on Tap will NOT be meeting this evening. It will resume December 14th.

MISSION CAPSULE: When Devika first noticed something wrong with her leg, she visited her local hospital in Nepal to get it checked out, but after a few years, Devika’s skin problems had gotten worse, not better. Supported by PWS&D the hospital provides support, treatment and education for people suffering from leprosy. At the hospital, the staff diagnosed Devika’s skin condition, provided the proper medicine and taught her about her condition. Today, Devika is thankful for the support she received.

FROM ARISE: “Outreach in a Time of Pandemic” - Deb Stanbury

The feelings that came doing outreach during the pandemic seemed like a swirling bizarre vortex. The sadness of Fran’s 24 hour diner, a Toronto fixture with lights off and nobody inside. The eeriness of Church and Wellesley being quiet on a Thursday night. The strip clubs on Yonge Street with their lights off and doors closed, no bouncers at the door or lined up taxis down the street. Those we did see were grateful for the support when so many other services had reduced services, closed, or placed limits on people coming and going. Those who rely on panhandling and squeegeeing rushed to cars with seemingly little regard for safety, desperate for whatever could be given. The few pedestrians walking around downtown were mostly wearing masks. Large signs indicated how to access the Covid-19 assessment centre at St. Michael’s hospital. The ambulance bay seemed to have more ambulances than a typical Thursday night. It felt weird, bizarre, strange as the weather threatened thunderstorms, and I prayed the rain would make it all clean. Unleash your Holywater, O God, to cleanse, heal and make all things new. Amen

You will be kept informed and if you have ideas to share, please contact your elder or the church office.

MISSION CAPSULE: In South Sudan, years of civil conflict have left much of the population without access to the food they need to live healthy lives. Rising food prices and loss of income due to COVID19 are only increasing this deficit. PWS&D is responding through Canadian Foodgrains Bank to provide 1,150 families with food assistance that will meet their nutritional needs. Additionally, families will receive farming inputs and fishing equipment so that, when the season is right for growing and fishing, they will have access to alternative sources of nutrition.

From the Refugee Committee: We have reason to believe that Hasan and family will arrive on November 11th. There is much to do between now and then, and beyond. If you are willing and able to be involved, and are not already on Klaas Kraay’s mailing list, please email him at kraay@ryerson.ca. Regular updates and requests for assistance will come via that mailing list.

We have an apartment and we have a month to get it ready and to move in everything that we have accumulated.

NOTE: Beaches has been blessed with a Student from Knox. His name is Kim Hyeongshin – he goes by Cole. He will be joining us for worship, prayer group and will be working with Katherine. Last Sunday he read one of the readings. We welcome him.

STUPID STUFF!

My daughter asked me for a pet spider for her birthday, so I went to our local pet shop and they were $70.00. Forget it, I thought, I can get one cheaper off the web.

Nineteen guys went to the cinema. The ticket lady asked “Why so many of you?” Buddy replies, “The film said 18 or over.”

I was at an ATM yesterday. A little old lady asked if I could check her balance, so I pushed her over.

Statistically, six out of seven dwarfs are not Happy.

My neighbour knocked on my door at 2:30 am. Can you believe that! 2:30 am? Luckily for him I was still up playing my bagpipes.

Have a safe thanksgiving. MB

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1st, 2020 - “Every choice has the ability to take us from the path, but it is also the way back at the same time.”

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3rd, 2020 - Jazz & Reflection Online – Steve Hunter, piano. Music to include Duke Ellington, Joplin, and other 60’s music with a jazz flavour. Register on Eventbrite to receive the video link.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4th, 2020 - Join us for morning worship at 10:00 – Rev. Katherine McCloskey leading.

NOTE: We indicated awhile back that we were targeting October 4th to re-open Beaches for a form of in-person worship. We developed a protocol for safe, in-person worship that meets or exceeds the local public health guidelines and canvassed the congregation. Since we made that announcement, we have seen the new infection numbers climb in Toronto and we are aware that a number of those who indicated a desire for in-person worship have changed their minds as a result.

However, our protocol remains valid and we have learned from the experience of other churches who have re-opened their doors. There remain some who wish to have the option of in-person worship available. As such, Session has decided to proceed with opening the Sanctuary on October 4th for a dry run to evaluate our capability to provide in-person and Zoom worship in parallel. Session will discuss the results of this dry run at our regular meeting of October 8th; at present there is no plan to open the church on Thanksgiving Sunday as we continue to monitor the situation in the City of Toronto and more information becomes available.

If you still intend to attend in person on Sunday, October 4th, please contact the church office so that we will know who to expect beyond the small team organising the worship. If you intend to attend, this is what to expect;

- All surfaces will be cleaned, including washrooms, prior to entry on Sunday morning.

- All doors will be open and remain so throughout the service to ensure touchless entry

- We will have a person to act as a marshal to ensure physical distancing and masking is maintained at all times and to assist with entry to and egress from the Sanctuary.

- Pews will be marked off so as to indicate physical distancing , though people in the same family group are, of course, able to sit together.

- There will be NO singing, not even humming, of hymns, which will remain pre-recorded.

- People may join in with the responsive prayers, while continuing to wear masks.

- Anyone speaking – including reading into the microphone – must remain masked.

- Following the service, people will leave the sanctuary and may gather – again, recognising physical distancing – outside the church to chat, if they wish.

In effect, we expect that the experience will be like attending the service via Zoom, except people will be doing so inside the sanctuary rather than inside their home. We recognise that for some this will be more constraining than worshiping from home – we know some like to sing along with the hymns – but it will provide the opportunity to be with other congregants in real time in the Beaches Sanctuary for those that value that possibility.

We recognise that times continue to be challenging and that we are all struggling to manage our lives amid the pandemic. Beaches Session continues to grapple with how best to serve our congregation in an inclusive and caring way. We welcome your prayers as we do so and invite you to reach out with any cares or concerns.

If you or anyone in your household is displaying ANY symptoms of COVID 19 or have travelled outside of Canada and arrived back within the last 14 days, you should not attend in person.

MISSION CAPSULE: Mistawasis Memorial Presbyterian Church in Mistawasis Nehiyawak First Nation, Saskatchewan, holds a unique place within the history of the Presbyterian Church in Canada. Not only is this church one of the oldest within our denomination, it is also the only PCC church located on a reserve. Gifts to Presbyterians Sharing … have enabled this congregation to faithfully provide ministry in the Mistawasis community. In addition to a yearly Vacation Bible School program and a women’s craft club, Mistawasis Memorial PC has launched a new girls’ empowerment program. After school, girls in grades 1-8 gather to learn about fitness and life skills. The prayer of this program is that these skills will help the girls live fulfilling lives.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 5th, 2020 - Theology on Tap gather via Zoom to continue the discussion.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7TH, 2020 - Beaches Prayer Group gather at 9:30.

I get my energy

From the rising of the sacred sun and the feeling of the soft morning breeze

I get my oxygen from the trees.

I find inspiration in the mystical rainbow after the rain

And a loving animal always soothes my pain.

I find faith in the stars in the sky, so vast, so mysterious, proof that there’s something beyond this.

It’s only necessary to take it in, not to ask why.

Sitting silently in a forest, I gain insight. -- Angel Power

The Presbyterian Church in Canada’s partnership with PCM began in 1981 with the appointment of the Rev. Today, our partnership continues through annual grants sent to Formations Biblique et Theologique a Maurice (FBTM), a theological training program for over 1700 Christians. FBTM’s director, the Rev. Maurice Davantin, gratefully acknowledges that, “Due to the generosity of the PCC, FBTM has been able to continue its ministry in spreading the study of God’s Words among Christians in Mauritius.”

MISSION CAPSULES: In Guatemala, 30 year old Marta Crisostomo didn’t know what having a clean kitchen and a balanced diet had to do with her son’s development and her family’s health. But an unclean kitchen meant that Marta’s family could be exposed to diseases such as diarrhea and intestinal infections. PWS&D supported workshops are empowering indigenous communities like Marta’s to improve their diets and health by sharing knowledge about cleanliness and how to prepare the nutritious food they are growing. The project has given Marta and the women in her community a sense of improved self-esteem. They now use the skills they have learned in their everyday lives – boosting their confidence and improving their families’ overall health.

MISSION CAPSULES: The Well Church in Mississauga, started with a group of only 13 people. They were drawn together by their deep love of Jesus and a desire to share that love with others. Inspired by a vision to become a welcoming space for second-generation immigrants, they developed a style of evangelism and worship that spoke to those they desired to reach. Since the congregation started worshipping together three years ago, their community has grown and has become a home for many young people who had strayed from the church. Please pray for the Well Church and the many other churches in The Presbyterian Church in Canada that are making space for a new generation of believers.

MISSION CAPSULE: Presbyterian World Service & Development (PWS&D) helps ensure that countries affected by natural disasters have access to proper sanitation. In South Sudan, continuous rainfall that caused massive floods washed away homes and food supplies of hundreds of thousands of people. Waterways and latrines were also destroyed. Without proper sanitation, the chance of contracting deadly diseases like cholera and typhoid are much higher. With PWS&D’s support, 9000 men and women are accessing clean water and adequate sanitation. Hygiene kits are distributed to families, along with training on improved hygiene practices. Ensuring cleanliness and sanitation is vital to keep communities as healthy as possible while allowing them to continue to thrive

MISSION CAPSULES: Camps and conference centres have been an important part of the Presbyterian Church in Canada for many years, providing vital ministry outreach to all ages. For adults, conference centres create “sacred spaces” for retreat, leadership development, education, missionary training, vocational discernment and so much more. For children and youth, a summer camp experience can help them to grow spiritually, socially and physically in a fun-filled and safe place of adventure and challenge. Camps play an important role in faith formation for children who would not otherwise have an opportunity to learn about Christ’s love. Please pray for PCC camps and conference centres so that they many continue to provide vital life-giving outreach for many years to come. (Note: Obviously written prior to Covid 19) …

MISSION CAPSULE: When Dr. Nicholaus and Becky Bauman left Canada in 2017 for two years in Nepal, they were reviving direct connections with people after 20 years. The partnership between The Presbyterian Church in Canada and the United Mission to Nepal began in 1974, and the last mission internship was in 2000. God’s mission in the world includes people who share their professional skills while learning about life and faith from co-workers and neighbours. The motto of Tansen Mission Hospital is “We Serve, God Heals.” Nepal is very poor, and Becky soon became involved in Tansen’s New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Centre, which cares for abandoned people with mental health issues. In January 2020, Becky and two of her children returned to Tansen to celebrate the Prayer Dedication of the new Centre, which received support from Presbyterians Sharing … Although Becky lives in Canada, her deep commitment and partnership will continue. Praise God!

MISSION CAPSULES: Kenora Fellowship Centre is one of nine indigenous ministries supported by generous gifts made to Presbyterians Sharing … Known in the community as “Anamiewigummig”, meaning House of Prayer in the Ojibway language, the drop-in centre offers basic essential services such as food, shelter, showers, clothing, laundry and transportation, in addition to offering skills training courses and health and wellness programs. Even more, the centre offers a place of hope, encouragement and safety for those who come through its doors, many of whom are displaced, living in poverty or struggling with addiction and mental health issues. Please pray that this ministry would continue to be a light in the community and a safe space where people can find the healing love of Christ.

THURSDAY, MAY 28th, 2020 - I came across a photo of a 1913 Kew Beach Presbyterian Sunday School picnic – this week. Interesting. That church became Kew Beach United and the Presbyterian part became Beaches.

SUNDAY, MAY 31st, 2020 - Join us for our Pentacost Service at 9:45 – Rev. Katherine McCloskey leading. In Acts 2, seventy people gathered to celebrate Pentecost. They experienced the presence of God’s Spirit both in them and around them in three different ways. They heard and felt the wind. They saw and felt the touch of what looked like tongues of fire, that rested on everyone who was there and then they were able to speak in a number of different languages as prompted by the Spirit. Pentecost is a time when we remember how God’s Spirit was able to fill that room and every person there. We celebrate the power of God to be present within us and within Beaches church. It is something that Worship and Arts are inviting us to do this year even though we will not all be together in the same place. During Church and during the coffee time we can show off our Pentacost fashion choices. I will be wearing red, which is a Spirit colour and also one of the colours that is found in fire. There will be a time of sharing at the beginning of worship during which I will talk about the fact that although we cannot see the wind, we can see the power of the wind when it is blowing. Please think about how you experience Spirit in your own life and bring that with you to share on Sunday. Some people might bring an instrument or music to talk about or share. Someone else might bring bubbles to blow or a wind chime or streamers to wave as the spirit moves them too. All of this can be talked about when we break for coffee. Because Pentecost celebrates the birthday of the church, please bring a bit of birthday cake or a cup cake or a favourite party snack to enjoy at our Beaches after church coffee hour. Katherine.

So, to join us at 9:45 – see your Tidbits Email or contact office@beacheschurch.org for instructions.
Good luck – see you there.

MISSION CAPSULES: Polio left 20 year old Kafietula and his 10 year old sister Shohita unable to walk. One day, arson and killings in their neighbourhood forced these Rohingya children to flee their home. For a week, Kafietula’s family members carried him and his sister until they reached safety in Bangladesh. There are many families like Kafietula’s who after brutal journeys are far away from home and without food or proper shelter. Working with partners at Canadian Foodgrains Bank, PWS&D is providing food to help them stay healthy, many Rohingya people can begin to dream again. “Shohita is able to go to school and is learning English. She has a dream of being a teacher and wants to help others.”

MONDAY, MAY 25th, 2020 - THEOLOGY ON TAP - From M.J.Perry - We will gather next Monday to begin discussing John Knox by Jane Dawson. I would suggest we read and be ready to discuss Chapters 1 – 5. The few of you with whom I’ve had conversations have said you have found it interesting and so I hope that will translate into a good discussion.

I have learned that the Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III, of Trinity United Church in Chicago, preached on “The Cross and the Lynching Tree” this past week. I am embedding the link because I thought you might be interested in watching it for a number of reasons. First, we read the book. Second, he preached this sermon within the context of the death of Ahmaud Arbery. Given that Cone believed that lynchings still occur, just by another name, it may be of interest to see how Moss uses Cone’s history and theological development in relation to this event. Third, this is the church home of the Obamas and where the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Wright was the senior pastor prior to Moss. You may remember it in the news in 2008-9. It has a strong, strong history of civil rights, social justice, outreach and education. I look forward to seeing you all on Monday. Stay safe. M.J.

TUESDAY, MAY 26th, 2020 - If you would like to participate in the virtual coffee hour at 10:00 please let Sue Lyon know. Lyonmail100@gmail.com
We are all missing each other, but hopefully if you join in the group we can at least see each other on a Zoom call.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 27th, 2020 - Prayer Group meets at 9:30.

STUFF:

Paraprosdokians are figures of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected and is frequently humorous. (I have included these before but they are worth another look, I think)

Where there’s a will, I want to be in it.

The last thing I want to do is hurt you …. but it’s still on my list.

Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak.

If I agreed with you, we’d both be wrong..

We never really grow up – we only learn how to act in public.

War does not determine who is right, only who is left.

Knowledge, is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.

FRIDAY, MAY 15th, 2020 - “You do not need a parachute to skydive, you only need a parachute to skydive twice!”

MISSION CAPSULE: Due to the loss of his leg from an infection at the age of thirteen, Halidu Dayuma thought he would never be financially stable. Some simple pieces of thread and the caring support of Garu Community Based Rehabilitation Centre in Ghana changed everything. At this PWS&D supported centre, which is committed to improving the quality of life for people with disabilities. Halidu learned cloth weaving and dressmaking so that he could make an income. Inspired by his studies with skilled coaches, Halidu is now paying it forward by training more than 40 apprentices to continue the work he loves. In gratitude, Halidu reflected, “I am who I am today because of your generous work and love.”

MONDAY, MAY 18th, 2020 - VICTORIA DAY – Theology on Tap finished reading Misguided Love by Charles Fensham this past Monday. We were also fortunate to have the author join us for our discussion. We are following our traditional schedule of taking the long weekend Monday off and will reconvene on May 25th. The book we will be studying this time is John Knox by Jane Dawson. It is available from Indigo. It is also available from ABE’s books and there are two copies in the Toronto Public Library System. If you are interested in joining us please contact either M.J. or Erin and we will send you the virtual address.

NOTE: Anyone who would like to participate in a discussion group to deal with all that Covid 19 have brought to us, we are offering a virtual group so we can share our stories. Some points of discussion could be: What are your biggest challenges? What resources are you using that you would like to share? What are your biggest worries? What is helping your mental health to stay strong?

We are offering a meeting time once a week on alternate weeks during the day and in the evening. Would Tuesday at 10:00 am and Tuesday at 7:00 be a convenient time? We will be using Zoom as a platform to meet. Sue Lyon would set up the meeting and send you an email invitation. Please email katherinejonah@hotmail.com and let us know if you would like to participate.

MORE:

There was a toilet paper museum in Wisconsin, The Madison Museum of Bathroom Tissue, but it closed in 2000. The museum once had over 3000 rolls of TP from places all over the world, including The Guggenheim, Ellis Island and Graceland.

There is still a virtual toilet paper museum called Nobody’s Perfect.

The Pentagon uses, on average, 666 rolls of toilet paper per day.

The most expensive toilet paper in the world is the Portuguese brand, Renova. Renova is three-ply, perfumed, costs $3:00 per roll and comes in several colours including black, red, blue and green.

70-75% of the world still does not use toilet paper because it is too expensive or there is not sufficient plumbing.

In many Western European countries, bidets are seen as more effective and preferable to toilet paper.

In 1996, President Clinton passed a Toilet Paper Tax of 6 cents per roll which is still in effect today.

Global toilet paper demand uses nearly 30,000 trees every day!! That’s 10 million trees a year.

MISSION CAPSULE: Globally, human trafficking is the third largest organized crime after drugs and the arms trade. Fighting human trafficking is one of the mission priorities of the Caribbean and North America Council for Mission (CANACOM). A fellowship of `14 denominations, CANACOM fosters partnership in mission among churches in the Caribbean and North America through sharing of resources, accompaniment and empowerment. In 2016, ARISE Ministry received a grant from CANACOM for its work in empowering women to break free from human trafficking. ARISE’s Executive Director, the Rev. Deb Stanbury, currently serves as the PCC’s representative on the council. By participating in the meetings, Deb is our living link with our partner churches and organizations in the Caribbean. Both ARISE and CANACOM receive support from Presbyterians Sharing.

TOILET PAPER…..

The first recorded use of toilet paper was in 6th Century China.

By the 14th Century, the Chinese government was mass-producing it.

Packaged toilet paper wasn’t sold in the United States until 1857.

Joseph Gayety, the man who introduced packaged Toilet Paper to the U.S. had his name printed on every sheet.

Coloured toilet paper was popular in the U.S. until the 1940’s.

Seven percent of Americans admit to stealing rolls of toilet paper from hotels.

On the International Space Station, they still use regular toilet paper, but it has to be sealed in special containers and compressed.

During Desert Storm, the U.S. Army used toilet paper to camouflage their tanks.

In 1973, Johnny Carson caused a toilet paper shortage. He said, as a joke, that there was a shortage, which there wasn’t, until everyone believed him and ran out to buy up the supply. It took three weeks for some stores to get more stock.

More later.

    April 30, 2020

THURSDAY, APRIL 30th, 2020 - During this time that we are living through I have discovered Richard Wagamese, an Ojibway author. So far I have read four of his books and have been moved by each of them. This is a quote from One Native Life - - “There is a song that is Canada. You can hear it in the bush and tree and rock, in the crash of a Pacific surf and the blowing of the breeze across a prairie sky. There are ancient notes in its chorus, voices sprung from Metis roots, Ojibway, Cree, Micmac and then French, German, Scottish and English. It’s a magnificent cacophony.

I have learned that to love this country means to love its people. All of them. When we say “all my relations” it’s meant in a teaching way, to rekindle community. We are part of the great, grand order of humanity, and we need each other.

It wouldn’t Canada with one voice less.” Amen to that …

SUNDAY, MAY 3rd, 2020 - Join us for morning worship at 10.00 from the comfort of your couch. Call 647-556-1123 OR uberconference.com/jda2602

MISSION CAPSULE: When the war in Syria intensified in 2012, many families were driven from their homes. The bombing of Garib’s family apartment left him clutching his two-day old son as they ran “a race for their lives.” In his family’s new home in Lebanon, employers are hesitant to hire refugees, so every day is a struggle. Garib’s family misses the things that made Syria home: “My four year old remembers that he used to have a bicycle back in Syria. That’s not an option for him here.” Through a PWS&D supported program, Garib, his wife and children and his extended family are able to access food vouchers, milk and diapers as well as psychosocial care. Grateful for the support they receive, Garib said, “I think the church does this because Christianity is love.”

MISSION CAPSULE: Lucsius knows that when he cares for the earth he can take better care of his family. Having discovered conservation agriculture, soil care management and crop diversification through a PWS&D supported program, this Haitian farmer now grows a diverse range of food. The lugumes, cassava, cabbage, peppers, carrots, beans, potatoes and bananas help make his family’s meals both colourful and nutritious. Excited for his increased ability to provide for his family, Lucsius saved the profits from selling his vegetables to buy a pig, further improving his family’s food security. Reflecting on the support he received from PWS&D and other farmers in his community, Lucsius said, “it is possible to produce better food to be able to feed our families.

Martha Fergusson, the Synod Youth Coordinator, coordinates Saskatchewan Presbyterian youth, participation in CY and summer Vacation Bible School programs across the province. Most churches have more children during VBS than they would have on a single Sunday during the school year. Martha said, “God is at work each day. The children often want to stay another week, the singing is wonderful and churches feel supported. Hopefully we leave an imprint of the gospel and hospitality in all we teach.”

MONDAY, APRIL 13th, 2020 - On Monday evening Theology on Tap finished reading its most recent book. After the regular conversation members discussed whether or not to continue meeting virtually. It was agreed that although we cannot wait until we can go back to The Beacher Café, virtually getting together and discussing a thought provoking book, even a bad one, is better than not getting together at all. The next book we are examining is Misguided Love by Charles Fensham of Knox College. Many of the group have already acquired it at its launch. Because the book is so recently published it is not yet available in libraries, AND our libraries are closed. It is however, available electronically and through book stores that are delivering at this time. Discussion of the book will begin April 13th at 7:00 by Zoom and we will discuss chapter one. For the sign-in information contact M.J.

MISSION CAPSULE;

“We are reducing the death of moms and babies through education and support,” said Mary Samuel, reflecting on the work of the PWS&D supported Village Safe Motherhood Committee in her community. Part of PWS&D’s maternal and child health project in Malawi, these committees are volunteer groups of women and men who educate their peers on sexual and reproductive health issues. From equipping men and women to combat sexually transmitted diseases to encouraging women to seek proper medical care and nutrition support throughout their pregnancies, the committees are helping whole communities safeguard their health. “Since the project started, there are fewer maternal deaths in our community.”!

NOTE: Susan Kopulos is busy making masks for the Michael Garron Hospital – so – if you have any narrow elastic and/or white or light 100% cotton fabric (old sheets or pillowcases) and/or polyester fabric for the masks , we will be very grateful and will arrange for pickup.

HISTORY: In 1954 Nash became part of the American Motors Corporation and the assembly of the Ambassador and Rambler models were built at the Danforth Avenue factory until 1957, when the plant was closed. Five years later Eatons open a store in the former car plant – Shoppers World at Victoria Park and Danforth.

THURSDAY, MARCH 26th, 2020 - Off the top!

Given the continuing situation with COVID-19, Session has decided that the suspension of worship at Beaches will continue beyond the end of March. We will re-evaluate the situation as and when more information and guidance becomes available. Our first “virtual” service will be this Sunday, March 29th. Details will be available later.

NOTE: Several people have dropped off their weekly offering to the church – this is so appreciated. If you are not on PAR and think this might be the time to join that system, contact Sheila MacDonald.

MONDAY, MARCH 30th, 2020 - Last Monday we had our first Theology on Tap on line. We were few in number and did not go as long as usual for a variety of reasons, but we enjoyed it. We will continue this approach until we have at least finished our current book Secular Scripture by Northrop Frye. One of the problems with our current book is that we all love it and there is no disagreement among us. Next week if you are joining us we will be on Chapter four.

At the last get together we will decide whether or not to continue with our next book. We have already chosen to read Misguided Love by Charles Fensham. If we continue and you are thinking you would like to join the discussion but don’t own the book it is available electronically. Here is the technical information you need.

1. We are using the Zoom platform

2. You will need a computer or a tablet with a microphone and if you wish to see our smiling faces, a camera.

3. You will need to register.

4. If you wish to join, contact Erin or M.J. and you will be sent an email with specific registration instructions.

Something to think about ……

There is a chapel in the Hadassah hospital in Jerusalem with windows in its domed ceiling to remind people that all prayers ought to be directed heavenward. More profound than this is the fact that the floor is sunken beneath the windows and that it is here that the pulpit has been placed. The chapel was built this way because the people who designed it believe that all prayer should be offered “out of the depths”

In keeping with this is the fact that one of this week’s Lenten Readings is Psalm 130:

From the depths of my despair I call to you Lord,

Hear my cry, O Lord,

Listen to my call for help!

If you keep a record of our sins,

Who could escape being condemned?

But you forgive us

So that we should stand in awe of you.

I wait eagerly for the Lord’s help

And in his word I trust

I wait for the Lord

More eagerly than sentries wait for the dawn

Israel, trust in the Lord

Because his love is constant

And he is always willing to save

He will save his people Israel from all their sins.

Have a good week – be safe and stay home! MB

Communication Concerning Suspension of Worship at Beaches Presbyterian Church.

It is with sadness that we are suspending Worship services here at Beaches Presbyterian Church until the end of March following the advice of the local and federal authorities. We do this out of care and concern for our community. We will continue to monitor the situation and review whether this suspension needs to be extended.

We are currently evaluating alternatives that we can provide in the interim and will advise once the details are finalised. Our prayers are with our community, health professionals, support workers, those keeping our stores open and stocked, those keeping our infrastructure working and all those in authority as they seek to find ways to mitigate this pandemic. Please take all precautions as recommended by our health authorities. We can be reached by e-mail at office@beacheschurch.org.

MISSION CAPSULES: Shaun MacDonald was inspired to be an instrument of God’s peace by the prayer of St. Francis. He decided to put that into action by serving as an Ecumenical Accompanier in Hebron, Palestine. From October 2019 to January 2020 Shaun provided a protective presence, monitored human rights violations, and supported local peace and human rights groups as he witnessed life under occupation. Most importantly, he visited Palestinian families and shop keepers to learn their stories so he could share them with Canadians upon his return. The World Council of Churches created the Ecumenical Accompaniment Program in Palestine and Israel in 2002. Since then, over 1800 accompaniers from 22 countries have participated. Gifts to Presbyterians Sharing … support this important ministry.

Unsanitary practices put them and their communities at risk. PWS&D supported community mobilizers are helping girls in India stay in school by educating them about personal and menstrual hygiene. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 20th, 2020 - I learned this week that life in “The Beach” was a little different in the beginning. The 100 steps at the foot of Fallingbrook were built to allow people to reach the Dance Pavillion that was right on the beach. In the early days – 1890’s – the Toronto Railway installed streetcar tracks along Queen to Balsam for summer use only. People who lived in the Beach and worked downtown, on dark winter mornings had to walk to Woodbine to catch a streetcar and they carried lanterns, which they left in a shack at Woodbine & Queen and on their return trip would pick up their lantern for the walk home…..

MISSION CAPSULES: Samsam, a mother of five, lives in a community in Somalia where access to food is a consistent struggle and many people are malnourished. Samsam jumped at the opportunity to join a PWS&D supported program to learn about nutrition for infants and young children. Through this program, she discovered a simple trick for determining whether a child or mother is malnourished; taking a measurement near the top of their arm. Now, by helping community members screen for malnutrition, Samsam is making sure that people in her village are receiving the care that they need. This program demonstrates the multiplying effect of enabling communities to help themselves. With 1,540 people trained on how to measure malnutrition in this way, over 15,000 children and 5,000 women have been screened so far.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 26th, 2020 – 7:30 - Beginning of Lent – Ash Wednesday service – a time of reflection, meditation and prayers …

UPDATE ON THE ARRIVAL OF HASSAN AND HIS FAMILY - we have just learned that they will be arriving in 4 – 6 weeks time and we will be given ten days notice. Since last Tid Bits we have been promised two sets of dishes; a set of cutlery; a set of pots & pans and a set of cooking knives.

We still need double bed sheets, pillow cases, tea towels, a kettle, a futon mattress, beds and a dining room table. Keep in mind we have no storage facilities. However, if you could let Peter McKinnon or myself know if you can provide any of these items it would be appreciated. When we did our inventory we found single bed sheets and several sets of towels that have been stored for all this time and will need to be laundered.

An inventory of what we have was completed this week and this is what we will need for them: a dining room table; a kettle, some cooking utensils; cutlery; dishes; pillow cases; double bed sheets; a futon mattress; beds. There are no tea towels, dish cloths or pots.

More later …..
